In Malaysia, the name Giant has become synonymous with everyday low prices, big variety and great value. This has
been underscored by the Shoppers Trend Survey, which showed that Giant was perceived as the cheapest place, in
Malaysia, to shop for everyday groceries.
Owned by GCH Retail (Malaysia) Sdn Bhd, Giant is over 60-years old and is a Malaysian brand built on its ability to deliver low prices
everyday to consumers. Started by the Teng family as a simple grocery store in one of the suburbs of Kuala Lumpur in
1944. Its mission was to offer a wide variety of products at the lowest possible prices. As our reputation grew, so did
the business.
The key to Giant's success is our ability to continuously offer value for money products. We retained this core principle even as we began transforming Giant into a national and international brand.
Today, after intensive efforts which includes redesigning the stores, the introduction of the non-food
products into the Giant hypermarkets, the implementation of international retail standards that includes safety,
cleanliness, structured training and a vibrant shopping environment as well as centralized buying functions and
improved operations, Giant has become the undisputed leader in Malaysia's retail sector.
The chain currently comprises of more than 90 Giant hypermarkets and supermarkets in all major towns and suburbs. GCH Retail also operates the highly popular Cold Storage Supermarket chain - branded as the "fresh food people" and Guardian, the leading health and beauty chain with a reputation for stocking only quality products and providing uncompromising service.
As a responsible corporate citizen, Giant is fully committed to improving the lives of Malaysians, whether they are
customers, staff or suppliers.
Towards the cause of the consumer, Giant has thrown its weight fully behind the Malaysian Government's campaign
to create smart consumers of Malaysians by continuously offering "Everyday Low Prices, Big Variety and Great Value".
The Government has named many of Giant's stores as its "low price" partner.
For suppliers, particularly Small Medium Enterprises, (SMEs), Giant offers development programmes to help them improve production processes and marketing knowledge. Among others, Giant has entered into a five-year collaboration with the Persatuan Pengilang Industri & Perkhidmatan Bumiputera Malaysia (PPIPBM) to help its members develop their potential in the retail and marketing sectors. Giant has also teamed up with the Federal Agricultural and Marketing Authority (FAMA), to promote Malaysian grown fresh produce and fruits at all its stores.
As one of the largest employers in the country, with 16,000 employees currently, Giant endeavours to maintain an environment that allows and encourages its employees to work in a congenial and pleasant manner, whilst striving for personal learning and development, and professional growth. Giant's human resource policy is to hire as many local staff as possible and train them to take on greater responsibilities. With a training centre in Selangor, our team members have access to training and knowledge of the industry, enabling them to play a greater role in the Malaysian economy. |
